I. A moment that sends a chill down your spine

Have you ever had this experience—you clearly want to lose weight, yet at ten o'clock at night, out of nowhere, you order takeout; you clearly want to go to bed early, yet you swipe across the screen again and again until three in the morning; you clearly want to speak kindly, yet speak in the most hurtful tone; you clearly want to seize that opportunity, yet when the words reach your lips they become "I can't."

Then you tell yourself: next time I'll definitely change. But next time, it's still the same old story.

You know what you should do, but you just can't do it. As if another you has snatched the steering wheel at the critical moment.

And this feeling is, in fact, correct. It's just that most people go their whole lives without knowing—who, exactly, is that "other you" who snatched the steering wheel.

II. The fundamental question this book sets out to answer

Why do all the methods for "changing yourself" eventually fail?

Willpower training tells you to "hold on a little longer"—but you hold on for three days and collapse on the fourth. Time management teaches you to "make a plan"—but no matter how beautiful the plan is on paper, the person who carries it out is still you. Positive thinking asks you to "believe in yourself"—but you can't even manage the act of "believing."

The problem is not that these methods are wrong, but that they all leave out the most crucial link: the "you" that is being "changed"—who, exactly, is it?

If "you" are that consciousness which knows you should get up early, knows you should be good to your family, knows you should change jobs—then why does this consciousness's decision always get overturned by something else?

The answer to this question points to an existence you have never heard of—the Mind's Controller. It is not your brain; the brain is only the hardware. It is not your personality; personality is only its outward expression. It is not your values; values are only its concrete content. It is the "invisible man" who quietly makes decisions for you behind every one of your judgments.

What this book sets out to answer is precisely this: who is that "invisible man" who keeps deciding for you? Where did it come from? How does it operate? How does it determine your destiny? And most importantly—can you take hold of its steering wheel?

III. The core weapon: the six-element structure of the Mind's Controller

You are not one "I"; you are a committee

The human mind is not singular but plural. It is not a centralized autocracy ruled by one "I," but a committee composed of six "I's."

The sensation-sense type: judges by bodily feeling. What is comfortable is right; what is uncomfortable is wrong. The feeling of the present moment overrides long-term considerations.

The private-good type: judges by whether something benefits oneself. What is beneficial is right; what is not is wrong.

The private-evil type: habitually negates, doubts, and belittles oneself. I am not right; what others say is right. I can't; others are better than me.

The public-good type: judges by the interests of others and the well-being of the collective. What benefits others is right; what can help others is what should be done.

The public-evil type: judges by "let those I loathe suffer." What is bad for my enemy is good for me; making those I hate suffer brings me joy.

The rational type: judges by logic, laws, and long-term interests. What conforms to the laws is right; what withstands scrutiny is what should be done.

These six "I's" stand side by side; none is naturally "good" or "bad." The sensation-sense type lets you enjoy life, the private-good type lets you protect yourself, the private-evil type lets you reflect on your shortcomings, the public-good type lets you connect with others, the public-evil type lets you set a bottom line when you are hurt, and the rational type lets you see the laws clearly. The problem is not that they exist, but whether each returns to its proper place and performs its proper duty.

The Eye of Observation: the presence that can see everything

Above the six "I's" there exists an "Eye of Observation"—your metacognitive capacity, the capacity to see "which I is in charge."

The overwhelming majority of people never activate this "Eye of Observation" in their entire lives. They are carried along by a few of the six types and yet take that for "themselves." Awakening means activating this "Eye of Observation."

It is not a seventh "I," but a metacognitive capacity above the six "I's." It does not join the competition; it is responsible for: observing who is competing, understanding why they compete, deciding who should win, and maintaining supervision during execution. The six "I's" are the players; the "Eye of Observation" is both coach and referee. Without a coach, the game is a free-for-all; with a coach, it is played with method.

IV. How the Mind's Controller determines your destiny

The core formula

The structure of the Mind's Controller → way of judging → choice → action → result → destiny.

Your Mind's Controller—that is, the weighting distribution among the six ways of judging—determines which "I" is more likely to be activated when you face a situation; the activated way of judging determines what choice you make; choice determines action; action determines results; and the sum of countless results is your destiny.

Six trajectories of destiny

When a particular "I" stays in charge for a long time, one lives out an utterly different trajectory of life.

The sensation-sense type in charge: pursuing immediate gratification and avoiding immediate pain, one may live as "a child who never grows up"—with plenty of experiences but very little accumulation.

The private-good type in charge: shrewd at calculation and skillful at weighing, one may live as "a refined isolated island"—with decent material conditions, yet finding it hard to have true intimate relationships.

The private-evil type in charge: forever negating oneself and never daring to strive, one may live as "an eternal supporting role"—living in others' expectations and, in old age, full of regret.

The public-good type in charge: glad to help others and willing to give, one may live as "one who is remembered"—not necessarily the richest, but certainly truly loved and respected by people.

The public-evil type in charge: living in hatred and controlled by anger, one may live as "one devoured by hatred"—wasting a life on "making others miserable," only to end up more miserable oneself.

The rational type in charge: skilled at analysis and adept at planning, one may live as "one who lives clearly"—but if reason is excessive, one may also live as "one who lives correctly, yet lives coldly."

The truly ideal destiny is not letting any one "I" stay in charge forever, but letting the "I" that should be in charge take charge at the right time.

V. The possibility of reshaping: the riverbed is not stone

The core metaphor: thinking is a river; the controller is its riverbed

Imagine a river. At first, the water is free and can flow in any direction. But every time it rains, the water flows along the paths of least resistance. Over time, certain paths are scoured ever deeper and become channels. From then on, whenever water comes, it automatically flows along these channels.

Your thinking is formed the same way. The first time you were negated by someone and felt uncomfortable—that was one scouring. The tenth time you were negated and began to doubt yourself—the channel had grown deeper. The hundredth time you were negated and unconsciously believed you were no good—the channel had become fixed.

Your Mind's Controller is the crystallization of all your past experiences—a "thinking superhighway" fixed in your neural connections after countless repetitions.

But the good news is: your Mind's Controller is not stone but riverbed. Stone is dead and unchangeable; a riverbed is alive and can be scoured and reshaped by new currents. Neuroscience tells us: the brain possesses lifelong plasticity. Although plasticity is strongest in childhood, in adulthood, as long as sufficient stimulation and repetition are provided, new neural connections can still form, and old ones can still be suppressed.

Three forces of reshaping

Driving out evil with good: using new, wonderful experiences to scour the old channels. The gentlest and most sustainable, but it requires time and a suitable environment.

Promoting good through evil: using necessary pain to break the old balance. The most powerful but also the most dangerous—to be used well, not sought out proactively.

Curing evil with evil: using an active rupture to sever the old shackles. The most painful and the most thorough—it requires courage and persistence.

The five-step method

Awareness: see your Mind's Controller—which "I" is in charge, what the automatic reactions are, how the pattern was formed.

Loosening: introduce new perspectives and experiences—read different books, talk with different people, go to unfamiliar places, do things you have never done.

Choice: decide who you want to become—write down a portrait of your ideal self, specific, actionable, and from the heart.

Action: do new things in new ways—make a list of micro-actions, tiny, concrete, and repeatable.

Settling: give time to time—rehearse the "three pull-backs" for when you relapse, design positive feedback, and accept imperfection.

VI. Eight dimensions: the lenses of the Eye of Observation

Once the Eye of Observation is activated, you have eight dimensions and can switch lenses at any moment to see different worlds.

The emergency-relief dimension helps you temporarily step out of pain. The bodily dimension: return to the present, feel your breath, feel your feet on the ground. The temporal dimension: ten years from now, does this still matter? The cosmic dimension: standing in the universe and looking at this matter, what is it worth?

The clarity dimension helps you see through the surface of problems. The essential dimension: what is the true root cause behind this matter? The other-person dimension: if I were him, what would I think? The rational dimension: what do the objective laws tell me?

The breakthrough dimension helps you create possibilities from within limits. The innovative dimension: is there a third possibility? The meaning dimension: what deeper significance does this matter carry?

You are not trapped in the predicament; you are trapped in the dimension you have chosen. Change the dimension, and you change the meaning of the predicament.

VII. The ultimate aim of this book: from rewriting your own destiny to rewriting humanity's destiny

An individual's destiny has never been merely personal. When the children of Gaza cannot drink clean water, when the flames of war devour innocent lives, when hatred tears different groups of people apart—no one can stand outside it all.

Because humanity's collective Mind's Controller is the sum of each of our individual Mind's Controllers. When the rational type and the public-good type are strong in most people, a nation can make wise collective choices and embark on a path of sustained development; when sensation-sense, private-good, private-evil, and public-evil dominate in the majority, a nation falls into a cycle of internal friction, turmoil, and decay.

The building of a community with a shared future for mankind is, in essence, the process of raising the weights of the rational type and the public-good type in all nations. This is not achieved through war or coercion, but through the dissemination of thought, cultural exchange, institutional borrowing, and educational cooperation—letting the seeds of reason and public good take root and sprout in every society.

From the awakening of the individual to the awakening of humanity; from rewriting one's own destiny to rewriting humanity's destiny. This is the ultimate significance of The Mind's Controller.

VIII. The place of this book in the system of thought

The Mind's Controller is a core work in the "individual development" module of Hua Guoping's system of thought, the key work leading from the theory of thinking and consciousness to the rewriting of individual destiny. The core questions it answers are: who is that "invisible man" deciding for you, how it operates, and how one moves from being driven by destiny to actively writing one's own destiny.

Its direct theoretical foundations are: On Thinking answers "what is thinking," establishing the core distinction "thinking is reflection; consciousness is reaction"; the operating mechanism of the six "I's" is precisely the unfolding of this distinction at the level of individual decision-making. On the Evolution of Consciousness answers "where consciousness comes from and where it goes," providing the evolutionary framework of the levels of consciousness. On Judgment answers "how people judge," proposing levels of judgment—the six "I's" are essentially a further subdivision of the ways of judging and their application to destiny.

Its relationship with the other works in the system: The Pinnacle Concept establishes the origin—what a human being is; On the Desires of Private Good unfolds it—what people concretely want; On Thinking and On the Evolution of Consciousness provide the theoretical foundations of thinking and consciousness; On Judgment provides the theoretical framework of ways of judging; The Mind's Controller is the application of judgment theory at the level of individual destiny—answering "why you always live the way you don't want to live"; On Resolving Suffering answers how to be released from pain; The Awakening of Value applies the framework of the desires of private good to personal value creation; Why the World Can Unite and The Community of Shared Human Happiness extend individual awakening to the destiny of humanity.

If The Pinnacle Concept is the "root" of the system and Civilization Cannot Burn Itself is its "trunk," then The Mind's Controller is an important branch growing from the main trunk of "the theory of thinking and consciousness"—transforming abstract theories of thinking and consciousness into comprehensible, practicable methods for rewriting individual destiny.

IX. The final answer

You are not one person; you are a committee. Within your heart live six "I's," each with its own preferences and its own ways of judging. You are not any one of the "I's"; you are the whole of them.

Your committee was scoured out by the past. The structure of your Mind's Controller today is the crystallization of all your past experiences—weighted by emotional intensity, frequency of repetition, and stage of development. But your committee can be reshaped, because your Mind's Controller is a riverbed, not stone; new currents can scour out new channels.

You can become the chairman of the committee. Above the six "I's" there is an "Eye of Observation." It can observe who is in charge, choose whom to put in charge, and switch freely among different dimensions. Activate it, and you move from "being driven by destiny" to "actively writing your own destiny."

Please begin your awareness. From today on, ask yourself several times a day: "Who is in charge right now?" You don't need to change anything; you only need to see. Seeing itself is the beginning of awakening. Please begin your choice—choose who you want to become, not who others expect you to become, but who you truly want to become. Please begin your action—with tiny actions, scour the old channels every day: one deep breath, one sincere word of thanks, one moment of helping another person. These tiny currents, accumulated day by day, will in the end scour out new channels.

From being driven by destiny, to actively writing your own destiny.
