Abstract

Religious faith is often assessed through doctrine, affiliation, ritual, or loyalty to sacred authority, but these markers cannot answer a more fundamental question: what kinds of persons and communities does faith actually form? This paper proposes a pragmatic-reflexive framework for evaluating religious transformation. Drawing on William James and contemporary psychology of religion, it understands "testing faith by its fruits" as a second-order diagnostic and regulative criterion, not a metaphysical condition of truth. The framework proposes nine heuristic criteria across three dimensions: inner transformation, relational-ethical transformation, and world-directed transformation. Testing must begin with self-examination, not moral surveillance of others. The paper introduces the concept of "sacralized ego-defense" to describe how fear, control, or hostility can be sheltered by sacred language, linking it to research on negative religious coping, religious/spiritual struggle, and spiritual avoidance. Good fruits cannot prove doctrine true, nor can bad fruits refute a tradition; both provide revisable evidence about the integrity of transformation. The framework offers a cross-religious vocabulary for self-correction and dialogue without requiring doctrinal agreement.
