Abstract

Freedom, democracy, and dignity are usually described from the perspective of the beneficiary — the chooser, the voter, or the rights-holder. This paper argues that such beneficiary-side narratives are morally incomplete. Kant's "Formula of Humanity" provides a normative foundation: human beings may be used as means to others' ends, but never degraded to mere means. Starting from this, the paper advances three interconnected claims. First, legitimate instrumentality defines those socially necessary uses of human capacities compatible with equal moral status. Second, socially realized freedom has a cost structure: mobility, care, security, convenience, and choice all depend on the labor, discipline, restraint, risk, and role-specific obedience of others. Third, democracy has a backstage: equal voice must be periodically converted into decisions through closure procedures, authorization, and implementation. Democratic obedience is therefore defined as a defeasible presumption of compliance — obeying decisions that respect rights and due process, while reserving the rights of criticism, appeal, organization, and revision — rather than an unconditional duty of obedience. The paper further develops the concept of role-limited self-subordination to explain how functional hierarchy, obedience, correction, and duties of office can coexist with dignity when power is purpose-specific, reviewable, and does not convert functional inequality into personal inferiority. The paper's argument is neither anti-liberty nor anti-democracy. It simply brings to light the costs and the qualified forms of obedience through which freedom and democracy come to be actual, completing a moral accounting of modern autonomy.
