From Externalized thought to Living Knowledge: Encoding Decay, Reactivation, and Civilizational Accumulation
Individual life is finite — how does civilization continue? Existing explanations either emphasize cultural enculturation or the autonomous growth of objective knowledge, yet the conditional mechanisms by which "externalized knowledge can be maintained, over long spans of time, so as to be reactivated by later subjects" have never received systematic analysis. This paper proposes the analytical framework of "thought materialization and reactivation," holding that an individual's "living thought" must pass through four links — encoding, storage, transmission, and reactivation — before it can be converted into civilizational resources accumulated across generations. Unlike existing theories that focus on "how knowledge is externalized," this paper asks: after externalization, under what conditions can knowledge still be re-understood, critiqued, and re-created by later subjects at low cost? To this end, it introduces "encoding decay rate" as the core explanatory variable, referring to the script variation, semantic drift, and grammatical change that symbol systems undergo over historical time, whose level directly determines the technical threshold and cognitive cost of reactivation. At the theoretical level, the paper conducts a systematic dialogue with Merlin Donald's "external symbolic storage" and the "faithful transmission" theory of cumulative cultural evolution, clarifying its innovation of advancing from "transmission fidelity" to "diachronic reactivation capacity." At the empirical level, it uses ancient Egypt and ancient China as comparative historical probes of civilizational memory, and takes the Mawangdui silk manuscript of the Laozi as an in-depth case, revealing how taboo-driven alterations, textual drift, and reversed chapter order in the transmission process led to the re-encoding of the meaning of a core philosophical text. Finally, the paper extends the framework into the age of artificial intelligence, drawing on empirical findings from cognitive offloading research, and points out that when non-human subjects participate en masse in encoding and compress the process of understanding, civilizational accumulation faces the risk of "quantitative expansion with hollowed-out depth," proposing the "human-centered reactivation principle" and its institutional paths. The paper's contribution lies in shifting the analytical focus of civilizational accumulation from "what was stored" to "whether it can still be read alive in the future," and providing new analytical tools for understanding the subjective foundation of human civilization in an age of accelerating technology.
