From Nature to Humanity: The Humanization of Natural Objects and the Inner Transcendence of Chinese Philosophy
The great success of natural science has strengthened modern society's emphasis on causal laws and technical efficiency, and has also bred a naturalistic view of society that directly regulates human life by natural causality. In the history of thought this issue appears as the persistent tension between "the way of Heaven" (tiandao) and "the way of humanity" (rendao): when natural laws are directly translated into social norms, value, responsibility, and meaning face the risk of being compressed into matters of fact and efficiency. Using conceptual analysis and comparative philosophical argument as methods, this paper proposes the thesis of "the humanization of natural objects by the way of Heaven," arguing that tiandao and rendao are not a dichotomy of objects but a dichotomy of relations — tiandao is the non-personified order in which things operate according to natural causal laws, while rendao is the value-normative order formed when objective things enter into human private-good desires, public-good orders, and expectations of meaning. The study finds that natural disasters, the generation of religion, and the ethicization of technology can all be uniformly explained by the mechanism of humanization; the personification of uncontrollable nature is a "meaning self-rescue" in the face of the collapse of meaning; and social Darwinism, which disguises institutional consequences as natural necessity, constitutes a "false tiandao-ization." Through comparison with Hume's fact-value dichotomy, Aristotle's physis/nomos distinction, and Heidegger's ready-to-hand/present-at-hand distinction, the paper further shows that "immanent transcendence" — establishing the ground of norms not from an external world but from within the human life-world — is precisely the distinctive path by which the Chinese philosophical tradition responds to the tension between tiandao and rendao. It follows that human society cannot directly take natural laws as the ground of norms, and that the rationality of social science can provide value direction and normative boundaries for technological capacity, social competition, and public life.
