The Hierarchy and Transformation of Judgment —— A Cognitive-Philosophical Analysis Based on a “Representation–Response” Framework
Judgment is often treated as a unitary cognitive activity, although agents respond to situations through immediate bodily orientation, affective appraisal, conceptual reasoning, and reflective scrutiny. This paper develops a representation–response framework to clarify the hierarchy, temporal structure, practical orientation, and transformation of these forms. Representation is an internal presentation shaped by sensory access, attention, memory, and symbolic processing. Response refers to the system's tendencies to approach, avoid, appraise, and judge on the basis of such presentations. Four levels are distinguished: sensory–somatic judgment responds to current stimulation; affective judgment reactivates previous bodily experience; rational judgment compares new representations with stored ones; reflective judgment takes an already formed judgment as a second-order object. A completed judgment changes how an agent speaks, writes, chooses, or acts. The interval from representation to judgmental response typically increases with memory, inference, and second-order scrutiny, yet temporal length is an effect rather than a defining criterion. Non-human animals can display concrete rationality; the distinctive contribution of human language is to abstract, externalize, and recursively transform representations. The paper finally distinguishes the structural level of judgment from the explicit–implicit mode of processing. Cognitive maturity consists not in remaining permanently at a highest level, but in flexibly coordinating bodily, affective, rational, and reflective responses with situational demands.
