幸福通常被体验为个人状态，却很少能够完全由个人独立产生。安全依赖他人的克制和社会秩序，财富依赖生产与交换，尊严依赖自我评价也依赖社会承认，自由必然与他人的自由及公共边界发生关系，爱、理解、归属和信任则更加直接地以他者存在为条件。因此，个体幸福虽然最终由具体个人体验，却具有不可消除的关系嵌入性。
Happiness is usually experienced as an individual state, yet it is rarely produced by the individual alone. Safety depends partly on the restraint of others and on social order; wealth depends on production and exchange; dignity depends on self-evaluation but also on social recognition; freedom necessarily encounters the freedom of others and public boundaries; and love, understanding, belonging, and trust depend even more directly on the presence of other people. Individual happiness is therefore personally experienced but irreducibly relationally embedded.
