Abstract

Happiness research has long developed along two major paths: one emphasizes pleasure, life satisfaction, and subjective experience; the other emphasizes virtue, meaning, capability, autonomy, relationships, and human development. With the development of positive psychology, self-determination theory, subjective well-being research, and eudaimonic approaches, the proposition that happiness is not reducible to pleasure is no longer novel by itself. A more difficult question remains: when multiple needs, behavioral tendencies, appraisals, and real-world conditions change at the same time, how do the components of a good life become deficient, excessive, conflicting, substitutive, compensatory, and eventually re-coordinated? Building on the author's earlier work Happiness Is Not Pleasure, this paper advances the Dynamic Coordination Theory of Happiness (DCTH). DCTH defines happiness as both a stage-specific state of workable coordination and the capacity to restore coordination after imbalance. Its central object is not simply what happiness consists of, but how its components operate together through time. The theory specifies five layers: eleven domains of self-regarding good; eight functional tendencies - embodied-material constraint, stress-action activation, reward-approach, recovery-low stimulation, self-regarding care, prosocial connection, defensive-boundary, and reflective-regulatory functioning; four appraisal modes - sensory, affective, rational, and meta-reflective; the concrete context of body, resources, relationships, culture, and time; and a dynamic regulatory capacity composed of awareness, differentiation, judgment, switching, and recovery. On this basis, DCTH identifies five basic mechanisms of imbalance - deficiency, excess, conflict, contextual mismatch, and temporal mismatch - and develops seven propositions concerning multiple domains, dynamic weighting, non-monotonic effects, functional duality, appraisal flexibility, recovery capacity, and multiple-path equifinality. DCTH differs from the established dynamic equilibrium model of subjective well-being. The latter primarily asks whether well-being tends to return toward a person's characteristic level after life events; DCTH asks how multiple needs, functions, and appraisal processes inside the happiness system are continuously reconfigured as circumstances change. The theory is designed for operationalization through scale development, experience sampling, longitudinal research, nonlinear modeling, and cross-cultural measurement. It also provides the micro-level foundation for the Human Happiness Community research program: if paths to happiness can be plural, a human community need not impose a single life pattern; if some regulatory mechanisms are nevertheless shared, pluralism does not prevent humanity from developing common knowledge about living well.
